Does Chile have too many or too few legislators?

Kenneth Bunker

Ideas: Laboratorio Democracia y Gobierno 2: 1-4

Abstract

This study analyzes whether the number of legislators in Chile is adequate, considering its historical evolution and international comparisons. It observes that from 1811 to 2021 the number of deputies has tended to rise, with significant reductions in 1891 and 1989. Applying Taagepera's (1972) cube root method and Margaritondo's (2021) second exponent, it concludes that the current number of seats in the Chamber of Deputies is reasonable.
